Welcome to the Environmental Studies Capstone Course blog. Over the past decade, community interest in reclaiming control over food production and consumption has fueled a wave of food activism, what Sandor Katz calls"America's Underground Food Movements."

Participants in this course are taking part in the urban agriculture food movement. In addition to reading , discussing, researching and writing on urban agriculture, we are participating. We are planning and planting a garden on campus, forming allegiances with campus and community groups, and contributing to a more sustainable community.

Garden Workday Directions!

Hey guys, Happy, beautiful Saturday! I wanted to remind everyone of the garden workday today from 12:00-3:00 at the Gadsden Green garden box(es)! We will be working with 15+ kids from the Charleston Garden Project who live in the neighborhood nearby!! Last weekend with APE was a huge success, so thank you to everyone who made it! I am currently out of town for Easter with the family but I really hope some people can go! I was hoping to have around 5-6 volunteers from Alliance for Planet Earth/CofC Urban Agr. show up... For directions (it is a bike-able distance) please see below: Gadsden Green Community Housing Project From Charleston, take Lockwood Blvd past Dept of Motor Vehicles, circle around onto Fishburne Ave, take a right at Haygood Ave, look for Line St on the left, turn left here. There is a large empty field on the left and about ½ block down, on the right, is Septima Clark Day Care and Charleston Development Academy Charter School (same bldg). Pull into this little parking lot, (or park on street) garden is in the back of the school within a fenced in area. Thanks guys and please give me a call if you have questions tomorrow. If you can't make it from 12:00-3:00, they can still use your help until 5:00....however their director would love for some people to be there right at 12:00 to get the kids started. Peace, Eliza Bordley Alliance for Planet Earth eabordle@edisto.cofc.edu 919-724-6667
